All that Twittering - but for what?
By Asif Nawaz
I'm posting this to Qondio with the hope of starting a discussion that will, hopefully, get us all some answers. In one of my professional capacities, I have been a firm critic of the excessive use and hype about social media, especially twitter. Whilst I have nothing against twitter, I fail to see all the lies promoted by the social media and online marketing experts who trail the internet and traditional meeting and networking forums across the world. Whilst I personally help manage the social media campaigns of some of our clients and know that there is a rather 'definitive' method to getting twitter followers, I fail to see how this can and does benefit the masses of businesses in general. I had a social media marketer come to me at one of the networking events (I used to go to them during the phase when the business was starting out) and say that he could get me 10,000 followers on twitter. My response to him was that I'd pay him more for 1 customer because I never have and simply do not see the point of having millions of twitter followers. The truth is, if you really do feel that the masses of twitter followers who you don't know personally actually care about your tweets, I think you're mistaken. There always exceptions and it is possible to gain some business from twitter, but note that twitter is another platform - the dynamics haven't changed. If you go to a business networking event with 5000 members, does it really make a difference what you say? Generally, no, because everyone is there to sell themselves and their product; they'll pretend to be interested but it ends at a pretence. Unless you sell something like 'print' materials or basic websites or things that are valued at less than US $1000, networking events will get you little success, if any. The same applies to twitter. What is all the fuss about thousands of followers? Is it just an ego boosting thing? Are people so sorry and so miserable in life now that things feel much better if you've got 1000 facebook fans and 3000 twitter followers? I'd love to hear your views, because I honestly don't think there's any more reason than that and 98% of the twitter posts out there are evidence of just that. It's probably also the reason why twitter has primarily only seen VC funding thus far and is still, in essence, looking for actual revenue generating potential without stuffing unnecessary advertising down the twitter accounts of people who don't really care in the first place! That's my view, anyway. |

Thank you for sharing this information on Twittering, Asif. I don't have a Twitter account, as I'm still trying to learn how it will benefit our e commerce website.Hopefully, some of our friends can enlighten us. Best wishes. Frederick
Personally, I find twitter to be excellent for self-made individuals. It sort of works like the "popular kid on the block" ~ bloggers and web publishers find like-minded individuals faster than surfing traffic exchanges and the search box gives excellent marketing trend information.

So then it is kind of like an ego boosting tool as opposed to a business productivity or useful lead generating tool.
